I’m a Grand Prix rider and trainer, and one of the biggest mistakes I see riders make with flying changes is trying to teach the change before the horse (and rider) has the ingredients needed to perform it. Once your horse learns to do the change incorrectly, or gets confused about the aids, it is very difficult to correct.
That’s when riders start kicking harder, changing the aids, getting frustrated—and horses get tense and confused.
